Wombarra Oasis
Built into the escarpment with some of the most idyllic views on the Illawarra’s South Coast, this house encapsulates open plan retirement living. While the external facades of Spotted Gum timber and grey stone connect the design to its rainforest backdrop, the oversized windows and wrap-around balcony invite you to step out and take full advantage of the coastal setting, with unobstructed views of the ocean and escarpment from the open-plan living space. The upper floor was built with minimal walls to take full advantage of this enviable setting, providing 180-degree aspects, while the
double-glazed windows and smart timber cladding provide maximum insulative effect to increase energy efficiency. This house was designed with the client’s retirement needs in mind and was built utilising low maintenance materials. The adaptable downstairs design also allows for future conversion to a self-contained ground floor unit to adapt with the client as their needs change. This house demonstrates that the challenges of designing for retirement living can still produce beautiful homes, when incorporating the best of the local environment is at the forefront of the design process.
